Northern Ireland-based agri-food company Ready Egg has announced a £2.9 million investment to enhance productivity, sustainability, and operational performance across its Lisnaskea and Chesterfield processing plants.
The family-run firm, one of the UK and Ireland’s largest egg processors, handles over one billion eggs each year. Its product line includes liquid and powdered egg, hard-boiled and scrambled egg, and egg mayonnaise. The latest investment will fund new machinery, including an automated egg-breaking plant, reverse osmosis system, and packaging robots — all aimed at streamlining production and improving efficiency.
The upgrade is supported by over £500,000 from Invest NI under the Agri-Food Investment Initiative (AFII). The funding will help Ready Egg scale its operations, strengthen energy efficiency, and modernise production lines through robotics and digital technologies.
Founder Charles Crawford said the investment represents a major step in automating key processes and boosting sustainability by cutting waste and energy consumption.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald described the investment as a strong contributor to regional economic balance and operational efficiency, adding that it aligns with Northern Ireland’s Green Skills Delivery goals. She noted that the initiative will create upskilling opportunities and deliver benefits across Ready Egg’s supply chain, supporting local farms and suppliers.
Invest NI’s Director of Food and Drink, Gráinne Moody, said the project could increase the firm’s productivity by up to 50 per cent, calling it an example of how automation and innovation can modernise regional agri-food production.
