Abbott Ireland has submitted plans for an expansion at its FreeStyle Libre manufacturing facility in Kilkenny.
The proposal includes extending the existing industrial building southwards by 10.5 metres, increasing the gross floor area by 1,375 square metres to accommodate additional medical device production, service areas, and corridors.
Alterations to the vehicular entrance and car parking will also form part of the project, introducing a new visitor entrance with drop-off area, six visitor parking spaces, and an eight-space extension to the existing car park. Ancillary works are included across the site to support operational functionality and efficiency.
The facility, located at the IDA Business and Technology Park, was opened in November 2024 as a global manufacturing hub for Abbott’s Diabetes Care business. It employs more than 800 staff and produces the FreeStyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring system. Abbott first announced the €440 million investment in 2022 and commenced construction in April 2023.
Local sources described the expansion as “a strong vote of confidence in Kilkenny,” signalling Abbott’s commitment to increasing production capacity and reinforcing operational excellence in Ireland.
A decision on planning permission is expected by 24 February 2026. If approved, the expansion will provide additional floor space, enhance site access, and strengthen Abbott’s production capabilities for its next-generation continuous glucose monitoring devices.
The move underscores ongoing investment in Ireland as a hub for advanced healthcare manufacturing, aligning production scale with global demand and long-term operational growth objectives.
